What an amazing few months for the Oxford Belles! We’ve had a very busy time, promoting the release of our EP ‘Women of Note’ (Listen to our EP here), featuring some of our favourite tracks from our feminist Edinburgh Fringe show of the same name.
When we began our crowdfunding campaign to take us to the Fringe Festival, we did so with one goal: to help the public learn something new about the Women of Note who changed the world, and inspire our audience to fight even harder for gender equality.
Eight outstanding performances later, we’re thrilled to say that we raised hundreds of pounds for The Malala Fund, which fights to educate women throughout the world; were hailed as “strong voices singing the words of strong women” and “[they had] excellent and very well rehearsed arrangements with great harmonies” by professional reviewers; and spread our own brand of feminism, selling copies of our EP on the door.
Our show took the audience on a whistle-stop journey from the Suffragettes through the last 100 years of the feminist movement, focussing on empowering songs written by women. Stretching our own understanding of the genre of a cappella, we also debuted a spoken word piece where the song “Pay Attention” was interspersed with notable feminist quotes, showing just how far the movement has come.
A massive thank you to everyone who came to our show, donated to our GoFundMe, supported the Malala Fund or reached out to us. Without your support 'Women of Note' would have not been possible.
